After last night’s debacle, I decided to throw myself into my work, first by way of whipping up batch after batch of sugar cookies and icing them to look like adorable snowmen and Christmas men—I’m a little miffed at Santa right now. And once I baked my heart out, I decided to throw myself into my investigation.

Surprisingly, it wasn’t too difficult to track down Cole North. I thought for sure he’d be taking some time off from the sheriff’s station, and he is, but he isn’t taking any time off from the charity event his late wife had organized.

I thought about letting Noah in on my intentions since Cole is his friend but was afraid he might think I was heartless wanting to question his buddy on the heels of his wife’s death. Although if Cole is the killer, he’s pretty heartless himself. So I did the only thing I could think of, I invited Noah to come pick out a Christmas tree with Lyla Nell and me. Everett said he’d meet us there. He’s been at the new house working with Bear to assess the damage, and I’m afraid to see what the damage is.

The Jolly Holly Tree Lot is located just past my mother’s B&B on a couple of flat acres. The first thing we’re treated to when we arrive are a series of large red and white striped tents, people dressed as elves running amok, and smack in the middle of all the holiday melee is a golden throne where the man of the hour—a far more genteel version of Santa than the one I’ve been dealing with—is currently taking pictures with the masses.

The scent of fresh cut evergreens enlivens our senses as “Santa Baby” plays its cheery tune overhead, and I can’t help but make a face at the subject matter of that famed song. But I’m here with bells on, literally, as a necklace of golden chimes dangles from my neck, and I’ve brought along a platter of my frosted sugar cookies, hoping to see Evie and her friends doing their best impersonation of an elf today.

“Look at that, Lyla Nell,” Noah says, bouncing her in his arms as he points over to Santa posing with a little girl on his lap while a line of children, about six deep, wait for their turn. “You get to take your picture with Santa today.”

She shouts something at him that sounds like a threat.

Lyla Nell looks adorable with her hair in pigtails, a red and white bow dotting each one. I’ve put her in a red jumper with tiny gold stars, and she looks ready to face the holiday season with all the cuteness she can afford.

A thought hits me. “Ooh, we should have Everett bring Pancake and Waffles by. If Lyla Nell isn’t thrilled about sitting on Santa’s lap on her own, I bet she’d warm up to the idea if she had her two furry best friends with her.” I quickly pull out my phone and shoot Everett a text.
